THE SCOTT Genius LT 700 Tuned Bike

The SCOTT Genius LT 700 Tuned is the ultimate Enduro machine. The Tuned version boasts a super light HMX Carbon Fiber Frame. With a custom FOX Nude shock with Boost Valve, a custom 170mm FOX 34 fork, our Patented TwinLoc technology, in combination with traction control, allowing for three travel/geometry settings and SRAM XO1, this bike is ready to tame all mountains. 

For 2014, Scott went back to the drawing board with their do-it-all Genius LT. The redesigned bike has been reduced from 185 to 170mm travel, but gains a new suspension design, 27.5-inch wheels, revised geometry, and a simple lever designed to enable you to pedal it up just about anything you'd like to rally back down. While it may look similar to the Genius 700, the Genius LT 700 is a big-mountain tamer with extra travel to back it up. The latest version looks clean and means business, so we were excited to put it through the wringer at the 2014 Vital MTB Test Sessions.

On The Trail. 

The Genius LT is claimed to be the “ultimate Enduro bike” so we treated it like one. Our rides in Sedona, Arizona consisted of several fast and rough descents linked together by meandering and sometimes technical climbs. Trails included Broken Arrow, Little Horse, HT, Slim Shady, HiLine, Baldwin and Ridge. We also got a few shuttle runs in on Brewer Trail, a rowdy descent with a good sprint up top that’d be at home in any Enduro stage race. Dirt conditions ranged from hero dirt to loose over hardpack.

Leaving the trailhead, we immediately felt at home on the Genius LT thanks to the Syncros stem and carbon bar. At 50/60mm long (size dependent) and 760mm wide, the cockpit is ready for the aggressive rider. We found the top tube length on our size Medium test bike to be comfortable at 5’10” with an upright and centered position with plenty of room to move around. The front end seems a little tall with the 170mm fork, but this encourages you to open it up on the descents. The bike is clearly made for charging and we applaud Scott for gearing this bike toward the descent crew - it should be with all that travel.

We found the bike to handle best set up in the low and slack geometry position, offering better handling over the rowdy stuff. The bottom bracket height, seat tube angle, seat tube length and reach are all within very comfortable dimensions. The back end seemed neither short nor long, just stable. Overall the Genius LT felt very neutral in many respects and was one of the more comfortable stock bikes we threw a leg over. Pedaling up to the first big descents we had high hopes. With loads of travel and pretty aggressive geometry to work with, just about any trail looked tamable.

As one should expect of a 7,600$ the Genius LT 700's parts kit was superb.

Ellsworth’s Epiphany C XC 27.5

a lightweight, all-carbon rig that is probably best described as a long-legged cross-country racer. Sure, it has 5-and-a-half inches of travel, but the bike’s steep geometry lend it razor-quick handling, making it ideal in the tight and twisty stuff, but a bit skittish on trails that are rough and fast. Enter the Epiphany 275 Enduro SST.2e…Yes, that’s a mouthful, but the important word in that title was ‘enduro.’ Enduro might be the most overused adjective/noun of the past two years, but as trends go, it’s one that I’m actually happy about: putting more energy into making bikes that climb well and rip descents like mini DH bikes? You can sign me up for that shit all day long. So, this is Ellsworth’s spin on the Enduro category–think of it as a brawnier, brawling version of its Epiphany twin. Like its cross-country sibling, this Epiphany is based on Ellsworth’s long-standing Instant Center Tracking (ICT) suspension design; a four-bar design that’s always looked a lot like a Horst Link with a rocker (though Ellsworth successfully defended his patent years ago as distinct from Specialized’s Horst Link design). The Epiphany Enduro gets much slacker geometry (a 67-degree head angle) and a lower bottom bracket. The frame is a mix of aluminum (front triangle) and carbon (rear end). Suspension duties are handled by Fox. The Epiphany is available in a variety of trim options. This one is decked out in XTR and Thompson components, so yeah, it costs a bundle. The frame alone, however, retails for $2,500. This is a first impressions piece, so I’ll be brief. The Epiphany Enduro feels much more confident on descents than the Epiphany C XC. Lopping off a couple degrees on the headtube angle helps here. For the most part, the component kit is stellar. There’s no downside to XTR or the performance of the suspension. I had mixed feelings about the Fox CTD remote lever. The remote enables you to switch between Climb, Trail and Descend modes without reaching down to fiddle with any levers. While that sounds great, the handlebar remote wasn’t working properly right out of the gate, which led me to run the bike wide open all the time for the first few rides. It also adds a bit of unnecessary cable clutter to the cockpit. I guess I’m just the kind of person who’s happy to reach down and flick a switch when the need arises. Keep it simple. Of course, the good news is a less expensive kit will net you the more basic suspension adjusters and a cleaner cockpit. Ellsworth clearly took note of the short-stem craze when they mounted the beautiful Thompson 50-millimeter stem on this model, but with a horizontal top tube distance of 23 inches on a large frame, the cockpit feels cramped. I needed a longer stem in order to get the proper fit. It’d be nice to see the toptube on this rig grow a solid inch—particularly if you’re going to run a short stem.
